2018 Subabu Forester is Drive Magazine's Car of the Year
The Forester 2.5i-S beat out the Skoda Karog, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and the Volkswagon Tiguan for its compact size, superior torque and exceptional comfort, which can be attributed to the new Subaru Global Platform that makes for a quieter cabin, more comfortable ride and improved handling and traction.
Meet Subaru's Champion Boxer Engine
The Subaru Forester 2.5i-S come equipped with a 2.5-litre flat four-cylinder petrol Boxer engine that packs 136kW of power at 5,800rpm and 239Nm of torque at 4400rpm, as well as a Continuous Variable Transmission and Subaru’s world-renowned symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system. The top-end 2.5i-S trim includes 18-inch wheels, leather interior, LED headlights and an eight-speaker Harmon Kardon stereo complete with an 8-inch infotainment screen and separate 4.2-inch and 6.3-inch screens for car performance information. It’s rated at 7.4L/100 km hour for fuel consumption and is priced starting at $41,990.
In The Forester, There's Nothing You Can't Do.
Drive praised the Forester 2.5i-S for how nimble it is, practically “gliding” on the road when compared to its competitors. This can be attributed to Subaru’s award-winning All-Wheel-Drive system, which ensures optimal performance when crawling around corners or making sharp turns. As the only vehicle in the lineup with full-time All Wheel Drive, the Forester 2.5i-S left its competitors in the dust when driving in rugged, slippery and otherwise challenging conditions.
And while it won Best Small SUV for 2018, it’s not really that small, offering “limo like” rear room. It’s the only vehicle of the four contestants that offers a full-size spare wheel and tyre.
Loaded With Safety Features
It’s also the safest vehicle in the lineup, with Subaru’s highly-lauded EyeSight safety technology delivering a five-star ANCAP safety rating to all Subaru vehicles across the board. Standard features include Lane Keeping Assistance, Rear Cross Traffic Alert Systems, Blind Spot Monitoring, Active Cruise Control and Autonomous Emergency Braking.
The top of the line Forester 2.5i-S also comes with reverse automatic braking, which can prevent accidents at low speeds, and it’s the only car in the lineup with a system technologically advanced enough that it can recognize and address changes to brake lights on cars ahead. Furthermore, Subaru has made waves in the industry with its state-of-the-art facial recognition system, which not only will remember your climate control, mirror and seat position preferences, but also has the ability to warn motorists if it senses you’re displaying signs of drowsiness.
Test Drive The Difference
The 2018 Forester is longer, wider and more spacious than its predecessor, with a harmony of power, agility, comfort and convenience. It has a down-to-earth, equilateral design focused on functionality rather than flashiness. It’s received accolades for its comfort, making it an ideal family vehicle that is safe, secure and solid on the road. It drives like a dream and comes with all the latest safety features and technological goodies you’d expect in 2018. There is an abundance of reasons for why Drive has selected the Subaru Forester 2.5i-S as their Best Small SUV for 2018, but to really understand, you’ll have to take the car for a test drive.
“It’s the definition of what Subaru stands for as a brand,” Drive judge Nathan Ponchard said. “The Forester does all of those things better than every other car in the lineup.”
